Obama Extends Patriot Act

There was outrage when Bush did it (not a fan of the act myself), so where is the outrage now that Obama has done it? Or will the left remain quiet and deny principle simply because of the party in the White House?

From Fox:

The House of Representatives reauthorized the Patriot Act for one year Thursday.

The vote was 315-97 .

Many liberals in the House opposed the controversial act, saying it tramps Constitutional protections and civil liberties.

Congress adopted the Patriot Act shortly after September 11th.

Many lawmakers wanted to rewrite or even kill some of the most controversial provisions in the act. But Congressional leaders didn’t have the appetite for a major battle with the economy and health care reform swinging in the balance.

Many of the renewed provisions involve wiretaps and eavesdropping measures.

The Senate ok’d  the package earlier this week. President Obama is expected to sign the bill into law.

Democrats’ OFA Plan Astroturf Campaign for Talk Radio

What was that about astroturfing? From Politico:

The Democratic National Committee’s Organizing for America has quietly launched an initiative aimed at making Obama supporters’ voices heard on the largely conservative airwaves.

“The fate of health reform has been a focus of debate in living rooms and offices, on TV and online — and on talk radio. And since millions of folks turn to talk radio as a trusted source of news and opinions, we need to make sure OFA supporters are calling in with a pro-reform message,” says the introduction to the online tool.

The online tool presents users with a radio show discussing political topics, to which supporters can listen live, and the phone number for that station, for when health care comes up. It also offers tips for callers and talking points on the issue.

If you have require your talking points provided to you, signaling a lack of knowledge on the issue, and if you’ve more zeal than knowledge you should refrain from debate.

The bottom line? The majority of Americans do not support the Democrats’ idea of reform, thus why it’s rotted in congress since summer – and they still don’t support it.
